The filing period for candidates to appear on the ballot in the 2019 Harpers Ferry Municipal Elections has ended. The following Candidates' Certificates of Announcement were received:

Note: The candidates' names are listed above in alphabetical order by last name. The drawing for ballot positions – the order in which they will appear on the ballot – will take place at Town Hall on Tuesday, 2 April.

Notice for 2019 Harpers Ferry Municipal Elections

Elections will be held for Mayor, Recorder, and five Council members on Tuesday, 11 June 2019. Terms of office begin on 1 July 2019 and end on 30 June 2021. Notice is hereby given of the following important dates leading up the 2019 Harpers Ferry elections.

  • 1 January 2019: First day to receive applications for absentee ballots from military and overseas voters ONLY.
  • 14-25 January: Candidate filing period.
  • 19 March: First day to receive applications for absentee ballots by mail from all other voters.
  • 2 April: Drawing for ballot positions. The drawing will be held at Town Hall at 9:00 a.m. Candidates or their representatives are invited to attend.
  • 23 April: Deadline for write-in candidates to file.
  • 26 April: Mailing of absentee ballots begins.
  • 21 May: Last day to register to vote for the 2019 municipal elections. (Note: Voter registration is conducted through the Jefferson County Clerk's Voter Registration Office at the Courthouse in Charles Town. Registration can also be performed online at this link.)
  • 29 May - 8 June: Early voting in person from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., including Saturdays. (Early voting will not be conducted on Sunday, 2 June.)
  • 5 June: Deadline to receive mail-in absentee ballot applications.
  • 10 June: Deadline to receive hand-delivered absentee ballots.
  • 11 June: General election day. Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • 17 June: Canvassing of elections. Results will be declared at end of canvass.
  • 19 June: Certification of results of canvassing for races without a recount request.
  • 24 June - 1 July: All candidates must submit a Campaign Financial Statement (Official Form F-7 or F-7A) during this time period. (Note: Short Form F-7A is preferred and will be sufficient for most candidates. See the top of page 1 of Form F-7A for exceptions.)
  • 1 July: New terms begin.

HARPERS FERRY TOWN COUNCIL

The Town Council of Harpers Ferry consists of the Mayor, Recorder, and five Council members, each elected for terms of two years in June of each odd-numbered year. The next elections will be held on Tuesday, 11 June 2019.

Regular monthly meetings of the Council are held at 7:00 p.m. on the second Monday of each month. Special meetings are scheduled as necessary. Notices of all meetings are posted at the Harpers Ferry Post Office, on the bulletin board outside the main door of Town Hall, and inside Town Hall. See the calendar of events at the right side of this page for other meetings and events.

Council appoints members to the various commissions and committees from a pool of citizen volunteers. Terms of appointed members expire regularly.  Persons interested in serving the town government at this level should contact the Mayor or a Council member for further information. All meetings are open to the public and are held upstairs at Town Hall.
